O Holy Night Piano Solo Pdf

'O Holy Night' ('Cantique de Noel') is a well-known Christmas carol composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to the French poem 'Minuit, christiens' (Midnight, Christians) by Placide Cappeau (1808-1877). Cappeau, a wine merchant and poet, had been asked by a parish priest to write a Christmas poem. Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight, editor of Dwight's Journal of Music, created a singing edition based on Cappeau's French text in 1855. In both the French original and in the two familiar English versions of the carol, the text reflects on the birth of Jesus and of humanity's redemption.LyricsO Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining,It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.Long lay the world in sin and error pining.Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.Fall on your knees!

Oh, hear the angel voices!O night divine, the night when Christ was born;O night, O Holy Night, O night divine!O night, O Holy Night, O night divine!Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land. The King of kings lay thus lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friends. He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!Truly He taught us to love one another,His law is love and His gospel is peace.Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother. And in his name all oppression shall cease.Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,With all our hearts we praise His holy name.Christ is the Lord!

Music by Adolphe-Charles AdamText by Placide Cappeau; translation by John S. DwightArranged by Sally DeFordThis arrangement is designed for choir, soloist and congregation, with piano, organ, and an instrumental obbligato. Ease of performance was the number one priority, so the vocal parts are very standard, with the verses sung unison or solo, and the chorus sung in the traditional SATB harmony.Obbligatos are provided for C instrument (either treble or bass clef). A vocal score for either verse three or all verses is provided (two sides of a half-sheet) for the congregation. The solo version is in C major instead of Bb. The accompaniments are identical and interchangeable, so the SATB may be sung in C or the solo in Bb if you like.
