As Iron Man, Tony Stark is one of the most unique heroes in any superhero universe. The character isn’t a god from another realm, he didn’t get a magic ring or helmet, and he wasn’t given a special serum to raise him to the peak of human ability. His power comes from his keen ability to build his way out of the most dangerous scenarios. In a way, he’s a lot like Batman - without powers, he has to rely on his mind and create the right tool for every situation even if he’s never actually been in that situation before! And over 50 plus years, he’s had to build dozens of suits that had hundreds of gadgets or special capabilities built in to them. A few of these have gotten shout outs in the films, but several of them haven’t - so if you haven’t followed the comics closely it’ll be easy to have missed out on them.

As Infinity War approaches and MCU Tony’s first battle with the The Mad Titan draws near, CBR decided to put together a list of some of the craziest and most out there abilities the Iron Man armor has been capable of over the years! What’s probably the most ridiculous thing about the Iron Man armor is that at one point it ran off good old A/C power. That’s right, the earliest versions of the suit used what were then highly advanced battery cells that needed to be recharged for the armor to continue working. So during off hours Tony would often hook his chest plate up to the nearest outlet and spend quite a bit of time charging his armor back up.It sounds absurd, but on some level it makes sense.
We’re talking the first three models of the suit, a time when Iron Man was least capable. He would’ve needed much less power to accomplish his biggest feats, so it makes sense that he could charge his suit with the same method we charge cell phones. After decades of using an all-purpose armor for the vast majority of his outings, and specialized suits for specific situations, creators Len Kaminski and Kevin Hopgood decided to give him something different for the Iron Man #300 milestone issue. After finally putting behind him all the major mental and physical issues plaguing him for much of the late '80s and early '90s, Stark puts on the Model 13 for the first time as he rushes off to battle the giant android Ultimo.Unlike his older suits, the Model 13 was created to have a modular component system, allowing him to equip different weapons or inventions at will for specific occasions. Not only practical, this suit is also particularly popular, as it was used for Iron Man’s 1994 cartoon series.
Not every Iron Man armor Tony has ever worn is as it seems. Several of his specialty armors have not been proper Iron Man suits, but instead exo-armors that fit over his existing suit at the time. The Hydro Armor was one such suit, designed to jettison Stark out of the Hydro exoskeleton if anything went wrong. Another was the Hulkbuster suit, meant to be controlled from inside the Model 13.
Finally was the Model 23, known as the Thorbuster armor, created out of a metal that could absorb the energies of Mjolnir. But that’s why Tony Stark is one step ahead of everyone else, as he knows that even stealth has its place. The character would be much better off if occasionally he specialized for certain conditions. It gave the readers a brief costume change, but it also made sense for a futurist like Tony to be prepared for any situation.Over the next eight years, readers saw Iron Man don three new suits, each designed to excel in certain environments: the Model 5 for outer space, the Model 6 for deep sea, and the Model 7 for stealth purposes. Each suit came with its own advantages and drawbacks - the stealth suit barely even had weaponry - but they all proved that no matter the situation Tony was placed in, he could create something to get himself out of it. In the late '80s, one of Tony Stark’s many loves was Kathleen Dare.

Kathleen was a bit unbalanced, and after a whirlwind romance that ended as quickly as many of Tony’s other relationships, she couldn’t quite handle being dumped and so she shot him. Though the Cool Exec with the Heart of Steel survived, he was forced into wearing a wheelchair for some time. Eventually, after figuring out a way to continue using the armor, he damaged his nervous system to the point that he couldn’t wear the suit at allAnd so, he figured out how to control it remotely. Thus, the Model 12 “telepresence” suit was born, in which Tony Stark controlled the armor through mentally issued remote commands.
The biggest danger though was that if the suit was ever destroyed, the feedback would kill Stark as well. The Iron Man armor has drawn power from a wide variety of sources over the years. Most recently he’s gotten power from the special repulsor technology in his chest that acts as a clean energy source that can run the suit and deal with its massive energy requirements without the need for constant recharges.But that’s from the post-movie world of 2008. Prior to that era, the Iron Man armor relied on a number of things - including AC power! But one of the most useful additions he made to the suit was a thermocouple, capable of absorbing energy from extreme temperatures of hot or cold. That makes his battles with enemies like the Blizzard and Firebrand really more like practice matches where he gets to recharge his batteries. It’s a little weird that Iron Man was at one point one of the more realistic heroes.

But as the years went on, technology has only gotten more fantastic, and for Iron Man to impress he’s had to go more and more out there.Ever since Warren Ellis took over the series in the early 2000’s for his brief “Extremis” storyline with artist Adi Granov, Tony’s had some pretty unique armor-up sequences. The armor’s done everything from be a unique symbiote made by Tony, to actually living inside of his bones and coming out of holes in his skin for the transformation.
